Annie Gilbert retires from her English teaching job to face an empty future of meaningless Facebook relationships and unneeded medical procedures. In a midnight encounter with an online video game, she creates an alternative self, a mage, which proves transformative. When her husband buys a seventh run-down house to fix and flip, Annie panics. She ends up in India with the mission of returning a strange stone to a young woman ascetic in the holy city of Rishikesh, and becomes drawn into a Tantric cult and an antiquities smuggling ring.
